Why AI is involved

Vent Mode is a voice app. When you start a session, you speak out loud to an AI character — a micromanaging boss, a bad driver, whoever's getting it today. The AI plays the character and responds in real time. That requires your voice to be processed by an AI model as you speak.

There is no way to run a voice session without transmitting audio to the AI provider. This page explains exactly what happens to that audio.

What gets sent and when

  • During a session: your voice audio is streamed in real time to OpenAI's Realtime API over a secure WebRTC connection. The AI uses it to generate the character's spoken responses.
  • After a session ends: the connection closes. OpenAI does not retain the audio.
  • We never send: your name, email, contacts, location, or any data that identifies you as a person. The session is functionally anonymous from the AI provider's perspective.

What is not stored

  • We do not store your session audio.
  • We do not store transcripts of what you said.
  • We do not store the AI's responses.
  • Each session starts fresh. There is no memory between sessions.

The FAQ answer in the app is accurate: the AI doesn't hold grudges, doesn't screenshot anything, and doesn't bring it up later. That's not just a joke — it's how the system is built.

OpenAI Realtime API

Voice processing — real-time only

What it receives: live voice audio streamed from your device during a session.

What it does: generates the AI character's spoken responses in real time.

Retention: OpenAI does not retain session audio after the session ends, per their enterprise API terms.

Your microphone

The app requests microphone access when you start your first session. iOS will prompt you to grant or deny it. You can change this at any time:

iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Vent Mode

Revoking microphone access stops voice sessions from working. The rest of the app (browsing scenarios, managing purchases) continues to function.

What we do with usage data

Separately from session audio, we collect anonymous usage data — which scenarios you launched, which modes you selected, session duration. This does not include audio, transcripts, or anything you said. It's used to understand how the app is being used and to fix things that are broken. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
